15 Lefferts Place December third (1906)
My dear Effie,
Your letter was very welcome and I am delighted to hear that you have two
sons. Boys are always closer to my heart even though I have none of my own.
I am also glad that your Father is with and that you are not left entriely
alone with the children.
Please believe that I am actuated solely by an earnest wish for your welfare
and not from any feeling of curiosity, when I say that I hope Henry has left
you and your little ones well provided for. I have had such a hard life myself
that I can sympathize fully with these placed in the same circumstances. John
has done nothing, has not supported us since Daisy was little. If his health
had been bad, I wouldn't say one word, but he has been perfectly well and he
has left me to bear the brunt, and I have never been a strong woman. I am living
in my Father's house and Daisy is the dearest daughter in the world. She is
so sweet tempered and sunny. If she were not she could never have been so patient
with her father. He has been a terrible example for her all these years. The
result has been that he has killed all affection in her heart as he has in mine.
He has deprived her of so much that is is hard to forgive somtimes I feel that
the most charitable interpretation is that he is not in his right mind.
I have not had any photographs taken for fifteen years or more and Daisy
has had none taken for some tiem, except some small ones which did not turn out
well. Whe nwe have any others, I shall be very glad to send you copies, and
wish that I might have yours and the the little ones.
With much love to yourself and the children.
Affectionally Yours
