Dear Sir:
Today the Clerk of the St. Jospeh Probate Court forwarded to you a notice
of hearing on Dr. Nelson's petition to be appointed the Guardian of the person
and property of Roger L. Russell and Teresa A. Russell. ther hearing is set
for February 5th at 1:30 o'clock, p.m.
As attorney for Dr. Nelson I felt that I should write to you as to the purpose
of the petition. Dr. Nelson was appointed guardian of the person and property
of these children by the Probate Court of douglas, Kansas on the 29th day of
December, 1960. Needless to say, since both the children and Dr. Nelson reside
in South Bend, Indiana, from the standpoint of distance, this is a very inconvenient
arrangement. There is also the question of the jurisdiction of the Kansas court
since all of theparties permanently reside outside of that state.
Actually the Kansas Guardianship should be transferred to Indiana; but the
law makes no provision for such transfer. Accordingly steps have been undertaken
to close the Kansas Guardianship and to re-open it here in South Bend. There
will be no change in anything excepting thep lace where the Guardianship has
its legal situs.
I would like to report that the children are doing well in Dr. Nelson's
home and that they will one day consider themselves to have been lucky to have
had foster parents who have taken such an interest in them.
Very Truly yours,
Louis E. Jackson
On back of letter-
I think Dr. Nelson should have Guardianship of the minor children RL & TA
Russell without reservation at this time. LWR

Letter from Leonard Russell Sat. 26/53 (maybe January-dmr)
Dear Folks,
Eleanor's condition is about the same. She seems to be quiet during the
day, but most every night she has violent reactions that are unaffected by sedatives.
All of the doctors agree that she must have treatment.
I am doing everything in my power to get her treatment as soon as earthly
possible. She will be removed to a state hospital within a few days as soon
as the legal part is taken care of. I spoke with the District Attorney this
a.m. and he said it will be taken care of monday.
She is being taken care of very well and she is under observation in a good
hospital.
The doctor says he is sure that the beginning was several years ago, that
usually these things start and keep growing until some pressure makes the final
break. He says that she has three different symptons that indicate this. After
shock treatment is applied they are able to get at the origin and start correction
from there.
I am so very, very soory for her now. But, I am praying that recovery will
leave her without this complex mental pattern that has preyed on her for so long.
I think of only one way that you could help at this time. If you could
write a letter for the doctors giving all the details of her childhood that you
can remember I am sure that it will help. One incident in particular I think
will be important. she talks a lot about a fire and although I can't get mujch
from what she says, I seem to remember that her maother was killed by fire also
that she became almost hysterical when we had a small business destroyed by fire
here in Brawley.
The children are with Maria the same woman we have had for three years.
Am fortunate that she is excellent.
The children had a very big christmas. Thank you for the gifts and Relay
my thanks to the others who sent. I have been so upset and with so many things
to be done I find my work piling up more every day. With going toand from the
hospital, making arrangements for home, christmas business, and prepoaring for
inventory it has just about got me in bed.
So if this missel is incoherent it's just the pressure.
Love,
Leonard
