He was a di4rect descendant of Dr. John Abernathy, an eminent Scotch physician of the eighteenth century, and wa also a descendant of Catherine Parr, the sixty but elusive wife of Henry VIII...He attended the Pierce City Baptist college, and later the University of Missouri, where he graduated with the A.B degree in 1904 and took his law degree in 1906. While at the university he was awarded a certificate in military tactics and a life certificate for teaching. After graduating from law school he established his law office at Carterville, Missouri and in 1906 was elected city attorney. In 1908 he wa elected a member of the Legislature from the Second District of Jasper county, Missouri.
