Morrison, T.A. A horrible tragedy was enacted at Gravette Saturday evening about
6 o'clock at which time Tom McDaniel shot and killed his father in law, T.A.
Morrison. On Saturday McDaniel was arrested at the instance of his father-in-law
for beating his (McDaniel's) wife and he was fined $50 in the Mayor's court for
the offense. In the evening when McDaniel went home he met his wife and demanded
her to tell where his child was and on learning that the child was at her parent's
home he immediatley went there and commenced to abuse the old man. He threw
a rock at Morrison, hitting him about the center of the breast and immediately
after the rock was thrown, both parties commenced shooting, McDaniel hitting
the old man three times, once in the mouth, once in the breast and once near
the groin, either of which shots were fatal. McDaniel was not hit. After the
kill McDaniel returned home and commenced eating his supper that his wife had
prepared for him before the killing and while at his meal he was arrested by

BOY ON TRIAL FOR THROWING SWITCH
Eldon Weide, a 14 year old boy and son of Rudolph Weide, a section hand
living near Gravette, is on trial on the charge of having thrown the switch which
caused a wreck on the Kansas City Southern near Gravette recently killing Charles
Waters, fireman, of Pittsburgh, Kansas, and doing much damage to the engine and
several coaches. Preliminary hearing was set for yesterday at Bentonville where
the lad was taken by his father and George Prael, attorney for the Kansas City
Southern Railway.
The boy, at a conference with lawyers, denied the accusation. Henry Austin
and ANDREW RUSSELL went the boy's bond for $1,000. It is thought the child is
mentally defective, having never recovered from an attack of infantile paralysis.

Mattie Johnson's death article 26 july 1995
John recalls hearing the stories of her parents leaving Benton in order to find
work, picking cotton. That was before the birth of their first child. Johnson's
oldest brother was born in a church, just across from the Drake field airport
in Fayetteville. They just didn't quite make it to Benton Co. before mama had
her first baby, they were headed here.
Later, the couple made it to farm land near Gravetts. They established Georgia
Flats.
In addition to farming, Russell served as a Benton County deputy prior to being
elected to the Sheriff's seat. After the win, the family, then, moved to the
downstairs portion of the jail while the prisoners were held upstairs. Although,
Johnson doesn't remember her axact age at that time, she believes she was already
a teenager.
She recalls that her father had one deputy. During her father's tenure, her
mother cooked three meals a day for the prisoners, which could amount to 36 people,
in addition to the large family.
We cooked a lot of meals for the prisoners, she said. we got 25 cents a meal.
It was paid by the county.
A couple of the prisoners stand out in her memory. She tells about one prisoner
who was locked up for murder. "He hunted pearls and sold them. I think
this took place near War Eagle. These two men ordered him around, then they
robbed him and they took most of his pearls out of his pouch, he killed one of
them for it."
It was beautiful, in later years she had the pearl mounted and gave it to her
daughter.
The other prisoner was a school teacher "who went off his rocker, and began
to baptize children, I don't remember his exact charges".
Growing up with six brothers and six sisters. That was during a time when there
was no such thing as a telephone, electricity, indoor plumbing or television.
Children didn't have much time to play. Chores and schooling took up most of
the time during the day for younsters. The children used to pick strawberries
for a penny a quart.
Bath water was always heating in the reservoir on her maother's Majestic cook
stove. During the summer, baths were taken in a metal watering trough tub which
occupied an honored position on the back porch. you had to wait until dark so
no one would see you, or you had to take it in the kitchen. A black, cast-iron
post also sat our in the yard. A fire was routinely lit under it in order to
get the laundry clean. Then, pieces of clothing were hung dry on thenearby clothline.
There was plenty of laundry and cooking with such a large family.
In the fall, my dad would buy 100 pounds of sugar and in the spring, he would
buy another 100 pounds. It cost $5.00 for 100 pounds. We always grew our own
food and we used the sugar for canning and baking.
