Cem. Benton Co. Arkansas.2
He died on 15 Nov 1863 in Centerton, Benton Co. Arkansas. The
Russell's lived in a little log house, near Wire Springs School House. That
is the Callis neighborhood, west and a little north of Centerton. Martha Ann
Russell (Fair) saw the bushwackers coming and told her Dad (Elijah) that he had
better hide. He ran east but the bushwackers followed him and killed him. they
then came bac to the house, and Martha Ann's sister asked them if they killed
her Daddy. they said "No, he got away". The family kept the suspenders
that he was wearing that day, with a big hole in them, where the shot went through
them.
The bushwackers then got a shoval of fire, to set fie to the house. Martha
ann threw water on the coals of fire which make the steam go into their faces.
They were so angry that they threatened to kill Martha Ann. She said "just
go ahead, if you are that big a coward". They burned the house and everything
they had, then took the team-that was all they had in the world.
Aunt Fronie Callis made the coffin (casket) to bury him in, (Elijah Russell).
It was made from rought oak boards.
They put thye coffin on a two wheeled cart. They had nothing with which
to pull the cart but got an ox from a neighbor and pulled it to the Gambel Cemetery
where they buried him. Women had to do all of this as the men were away fighting.
This is a little example of how the North did the South. No wonder the
South hated them for so long.

memories of the past, relating to me many times her gruesome experiences during
the civil war. Dear Grandma is gone, never again will your poor, feeble arms
encircle our neck and your sweet voice say to us "Oh! I love you, Hugh,
God knows I love you." It wouold be cruel to wish you back yet our heart
